My opinion on Sly's case
Today I wanted to voice my opinion on the whole Sylvester Oromoni case. I have followed this case from the very first day up till now and honestly speaking as much as i am disappointed with the final verdict,I can not say that I did not expect this.
ok..for those who don't know the story,I'll just say something small and let you go read about it.
Now Sylvester was a student of Dowen college Lagos. He was a charming and lively soul(although I never knew him personally I could tell just by looking at him). Now on the 30th of November 2020,i had casually and jejely opened my phone so as to look for who to annoy with my daily flashing but I got a notification from my PHX Browser about a boy who had been killed because he refused to join their cult.. Now I won't lie,I thought this was another ridiculous story that I normally read but I was not prepared for what I saw next.
The poor child had been beaten up and given something to consume all because according to what they told us 'he refused to join a cult'. Now I did not attend a boarding school but I know how much pressure one is put on by his peers to join something. I was still finding it impossible to believe till I watched the video...and...My...Heart....Stopped... If it was possible for the human lungs to get filled up with liquids then my heart was literally drowning in an ocean of my tears. I am a very emotional person but that video seriously dealt with me.. it completely shattered me and almost immediately I wanted to get completely involved in it. so I downloaded Instagram, created an account and went looking for the appropriate hashtags to follow. I finally did and I set a notification for the various hashtags so as to get updates when they get posted.
Now to just digress a little I have one small question... why do we misuse hashtags?.. I mean in a particular hashtag,I saw pictures of bags, clothes, people dancing . and I was like..WHY??!!.. what has all that got to do with the boy?..i am going off track.. I am sorry..
now like I said earlier I wouldn't tell you anything other than my view of the topic. So I advice you go read the full story. Anyone with a heart that pumps blood would be enraged by the video and I almost reacted in a way that would have backfired but thank God i didn't. Social media was going crazy with people demanding for justice and calling out the school authorities, the parents of the suspects as well as the government to take action.
initially things were going well...1) they closed the school 2)they got the best lawyer in Nigeria 3) they had the support and backing of many but there was something I noticed that brought me to the conclusion that this won't end well. I am not talking about the staff revealing how the school truly is or the parents withdrawing their wards or even that the suspects were taken into hiding..
No..
It was the very fact that those who were called out by Sly before he passed, did not come out to apologize or even say a word. What I saw instead was an Instagram screenshot that showed what we could assume to be one of the suspects bragging and saying that the case would grow cold soon. That was when i knew that this was going to end easily and not in the Oromoni's favor.... and just so you know saying "I sympathize with you" and "I am sorry" is not the same.(not to me at least)... no one came forward.. not one person. It was at this moment that I knew that this would end coldly and guess what..
I think it just did..
I don't want to say much but a new autopsy was released and I kid you not when I tell you that it is different from the first one.. and now..everyone is free to go...the teachers are free to leave the station, the school might reopen, the suspects are released on bail that their parents can afford and finally... a mother who lost a child will not get the closure she deserves..the whole thing just annoys me. In my opinion. I would say that the boy deserved better. cult or no cult.. no child should have to die like that..
I honestly hope that something gets done.. all this has me wishing that the ghosts that appear in those Nollywood movies were real..
well.. until next time.. have a lovely day..
